Why Human Tutors Still Matter in the Age of AI

Singapore’s education landscape is buzzing with innovation. One standout is The Wise Otter, an AI tutor built by former data analyst Jotham Goh. Designed around local school rubrics, this Telegram-based bot helps students tackle math, English, and science with step-by-step guidance and rubric-based feedback. For just $4.20 a week, students can access thousands of queries—making academic support more affordable and accessible.
But as someone deeply involved in nurturing students through Thinking Pathways, I believe this: AI can assist, but it cannot replace the human touch.
At Thinking Pathways, we work with students of all abilities—neurodiverse learners, those with dyslexia, and those simply needing a different way in. Our tutors don’t just teach; they listen. We notice the pause before a student answers, the flicker of doubt in their eyes, the joy when a concept finally clicks. These are moments no AI can detect or respond to.
We use technology creatively—Padlet, Google Slides, games like Adsumudi and Proof!—but always as a bridge to deeper connection. Our lessons are tactile, visual, and collaborative. We mentor our tutors to be emotionally attuned and responsive, because learning isn’t just about content—it’s about confidence, safety, and being seen.
Even Goh acknowledges that about 10% of The Wise Otter’s responses are inaccurate. That’s not a flaw—it’s a reminder. AI is trained on data, not intuition. It can’t tell when a student is confused or when misinformation is quietly taking root. It can’t adapt in real time to a child’s emotional state or shift its approach based on a student’s learning profile.
AI tutors like The Wise Otter are valuable tools, especially for revision and practice. But they should complement—not replace—the relational, intuitive work of educators. At Thinking Pathways, we believe in the power of human connection to spark breakthroughs, build trust, and transform learning.
So let’s embrace innovation, yes. But let’s also protect what’s irreplaceable: the living, breathing tutors who see beyond the answers and into the hearts of their students.
