As a mother, I carry many hopes for my son—some tender, some bold, and one that pulses deeply with conviction: I want my 4th generation Singaporean son to serve the nation when he turns 18, proudly.
This wish isn’t born from obligation, but from love. Love for a country that has shaped generations of resilience, opportunity, and peace. My son stands on the shoulders of those who came before him—great-grandparents who weathered hardship, grandparents who built, and parents who dream. His roots run deep in Singaporean soil, and I want him to feel that connection not just in name, but in action.
National Service is more than a rite of passage. It’s a moment of becoming. It teaches discipline, unity, and the quiet strength of sacrifice. I want my son to walk into that chapter not with reluctance, but with pride—knowing that his contribution matters. That he’s part of something larger than himself. That he’s giving back to a nation that has given him safety, education, and a future.
I know it won’t be easy. There will be early mornings, tough training, and moments of doubt. But I also know it will shape him into a man of character. A protector. A citizen who understands the value of peace because he’s helped preserve it.
So I pray, I guide, and I nurture. And when the time comes, I’ll watch him step forward—not just as my son, but as a young Singaporean ready to serve with honor.
That will be my quiet triumph. And his proud beginning.
